Murder and violence at the hands of not only oppressive people, but also oppressive systems and institutions is nothing new to the black community. While this time has been one of immense heartache, disappointment, and grief, there has also been unprecedented support for the betterment of black lives across the globe. I am personally grateful and thankful to everyone doing the most they can to protest, donate, and support at this time. There will be beauty for ashes.
Manja is one of my middle names. Meaning uncompromising and strong-willed, the name continues to drive my work and my dedication to the improvement of black lives all over the world. While this is a small but expanding platform, I hope to continue highlighting cultural products coming out of Africa as well as from its Diaspora. Our creativity, and our stories. I want us to always hold and have space, regardless of what trends in the media.
One of the things I value most is education. Education helps us broaden our self awareness and as a result, can help us be more empathetic and be the strongest versions of ourselves, better suited for activism. It helps us heal and support. While I hope this site can showcase and educate, the link below can be used as a helpful resource guide to donate to organizations supporting protesters and those affected by police brutality. I will be updating it as frequently as I can with more ways to support the change forward.
While being solutions focused and steadfast in our mission to eradicate racism in every part of society, it’s also so important to take care of ourselves during this journey. While we will never cease to tire of seeing reflections of ourselves and our loved ones being broken down and beaten, we are not weak, and we will never be defeated.
Rest in power to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Oluwatoyin Salau, Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, Rayshard Brooks and countless others.
Signed,
Natasha Decker
